It was as if God himself was angry at the world as lightning and rain was hurled down on my stables 6 years ago. At the time my place was just starting out and one of my broad mares, Stormy, was in the pasture with about 6 other mares. My mom and I rushed out to get all the horses in. Teeth lashed and hooves flew as the terrified horses wheeled away from our comforting hands. We ended up having to increase there terror by roping the and dragging them in. The only two horses left was Stormy and Dixie, my mom 16-year-old mare. Dixie came easily. Stormy wasn't scared, but excited. She's let within a couple of feet of her before she'd dance away. Suddenly, a tree limb flew our way. My mom threw me to the ground. The branch caught hold of the tarp covering the hay. Just as the tarp flew of, lightning flew down and lit the hay up instantly. Stormy was right by it at the time. She ran in terror...straight toward the fence. I could only watch in growing horror as she tried to run right through the wood. My screams mingled with the crashing of the thunder. Stormy plowed into the wood. Bones and wood splintered, blood mixed with rain. My mom and I dashed to her still side. Mom screamed into her cell for the vet to get there NOW! A few hours later Stormy was in her stall, bandages covered half her body. The vet said that her front right leg was broken in the places and three ribs were cracked. Don't get me wrong with what I'm about to say next I love Stormy to death. But she wasn't my mane concern. I was worried about her baby. Yes… she was pregnant. The vet said she wouldn't know until the x-rays were done. All night I sat at her side and dabbed her face and neck with a wet sponge. I wasn't about to lose her AND the baby. After long weeks and many nights lying awake wondering if the baby was still alive. After a month, I read a story on Monty Roberts. He inspired me to put my full trust in Stormy and believe she would get better. 2 months later, Stormy went into labor. Most of her bandages were gone, but she still had her leg in a cast and braces around her barrel. Everything went smoothly. My iron gray mare gave birth to a moonbeam colored filly…Sahara. Stormy never recovered fully, she’ll always have a limp in her walk. So her dressage days are over. She’s a great pleasure horse though! And now Sahara and I clean up at barrel racing! Now that she’s older she’s developed a flea-bitten coat.
That’s the story of Sahara’s heritage. It’s sad but true. Any questions or comments?

The limp isn't out of pain. When the part of her bone near her knee broke, it killed a few nerves. She had major surgerey and after physical therepy, she was able to biuld up strength in other areas of her leg. I used to have a site that had pictures, but it got canceled when my other computer was fried in a storm.

Hanging out at VG's and ridding Flash take up most of my spare time. But...I'm starting to take a little bit of time out to get online.

oh, i'm so glad that they both lived. i've heard of how you've talked about Stormy. she's a wonderful horse. I'm glad Sahara lived. she's a beauiful horse. i don't know what i would have done if my horse was injured like Stormy. i probably would have paniced and never left his side. Star is everything to my. He is my future, past and present and always will be.
