Ok I need help!

I am an English girl and live in the UK
This means I don't understand some of the things in Chestnut Hill...

First off, how old are people who are in seventh grade like the girls in Chestnut Hill?

What exactly is a BlackBerry?

OH! And has anyone else noticed [ or is it just in the English books that this happens?? ] that Quince's gender changes a lot? Is he a boy or a girl? And sometimes he is referred to as Quincy... And some other details change, too, but I can figure them out myself  Grin

What do 'stalls' look like and what is the thing that they 'duck under' to get in/out or whatever??? I've only ever seen loose boxes.

Kiss Thanks if you reply to this post Smiley I'm new

Ok, I'll help as much as I can, I'm English too but I've lived in the States i nthe past and spend way too much time watching American dramas and reading books that are set in the US so I can help with most of it.

1. Seventh Graders are 12 or 13, its the equivilant to year 8, I think! But anyone who is actually in the States or indeed is a seventh grader, feel free to correct me!

2. A BlackBerry is a moblie phone, but its designed for email use as well. Its different from other mobiles because it has a full keyboard. They are available in the UK as well, but they're not as common with teenagers, they're mostly used by business people.

3. I hadn't noticed that Quince's gender changes actually, but you're probably right. Quince is a gelding, Thats what he is when he's first introduced so thats what I believe he is. Quince's full name is A Spoonful of Quince (I think?!) so sometimes he's called Quincy for short but others its Quince.

4. Stalls can just be another word for loose boxes (theres a lot of different words used for the same things in the States and the UK, it can be a little confusing!). Effectively they're all pretty similar and theres really not a lot of difference. Some boxes have ropes or a chain across the doorway to stop the horse wandering out but so that riders/grooms/stable people can come and go quickly, this is what they go under to get in/out. Usually theres a proper half door there as well, but its kept open either during the day when theres people around or all the time depending on the particular horse and the yard manager's preference.

Is a buckskin.. the same or different .. to a dun?

If so what's the difference and is buckskin just a term used in America?

You're welcome Smiley

Yeah buckskin is pretty much the same as dun. Its a slight varation on it, but here in the UK we would still call it dun. I'm not sure if buckskin is used else where in the world or just the States.

I live in Canada, but I'm in grade 7 (we call seventh grade grade seven here) and I'm 12. Well, will be in December. If you're in gr 1, your 6, unless your b-day is AFTER school starts. That sounds more complicater than it is. How about this: If you are in grade 1, you turn 6 that year. ie. if you were born in 1995, then you would turn 6 in 2001, meaning you would be going into grade 1 that year. Sorry if it's confusing, I'm better using words to explain something than writing it out:)

Seventh grade/grade 7, same thing, just people phrasing it differently! Let me put it this way to you (using me as an example, cause that makes sense to me then!!)

Born April 1988
Reception (UK schooling only): Age 4, turn 5 while there
Kindergarten/equivilent age wise to year 1 in the UK: Age 5, turn 6
Grade 1/year 2: age 6, turn 7
Grade 2/year 3: age 7, turn 8
Grade 3/year 4: age 8, turn 9
Grade 4/year 5: age 9, turn 10
Grade 5/year 6: age 10, turn 11
Grade 6/year 7: age 11, turn 12
Grade 7/year 8: age 12, turn 13

This age range would apply to anyone in the UK born between the beginning of September 1987 and August of 1988. It is, I think, a very similar system in America and Canada, the only difference is the months applied because the term times are different.

But basically you can fit this to everyone, you just need to work it out from when you were born. So for example (UK based):
Born August 1990 - start school age 4 in 1994. You'll just be one of the youngest in the class having only turned 4 just before starting school
Born September 1990 - Start school 1995 age 4 but very quickly change to 5, therefore being one of the oldest in the class.

Does that make sense?
