Ow! Brett thought when she moved my head only slightly. She opened her eyes to see a white room with chairs and a massive window that was letting daylight stream in. Where am I? Brett tried to say but all that came out her dry mouth was, “Umm uh.”
But that was enough to let someone know that she was awake, “Oh my god, she’s awake-hi sweetie.” Brett peered to see who it was but all she could see was the dark outline of their body’s even though the room was bright. One was someone with a straight figure, the other hade a curvy but slim look.
After a few minutes her almond brown eyes fixed and Brett saw who the two mystery people were, a young-looking nurse in a straight green jacket and Marissa -MARISSA! Marissa was her older sister, now twenty-eight. When she was nineteen she completed a five year course at Bristol University, shortly after she moved from home, Bristol, to London hoping to get an excellent job that uses her skills.
Now she was in front of Brett, her sweet-smelling long curly brunette hair pushed back behind her small ears-the first time for a few years. She looked distressed and miserable. “Wh-ere’s M-u-um And D-ad?” Brett asked, the talking was hurting her throat. Marissa started blubbing like a baby, Brett had never seen her sister like this before, she gave every one the impression that she was strong and nothing could get through her-in a nice way, “Umm, Err. Well Brett, can you remember what happened a couple of nights ago?” The nurse was watching over us. I took a deep breath, “No.”
“You were in the car, it was wet. The car crashed into a massive tree and well you were so lucky,” my sister rushed out quickly. Brett felt tears burn my eyes, “No, No, Please NO!” she shrieked. Tears started to pour down Marissa’s face too, “I’m sorry,” she said softly, holding my head next to her perfume fragrant neck. “It’s all my fault!” Brett cried. Marissa kept on comforting her, “How?” she asked. “I told them to go down the road we went, the road that was too wet, the road that killed my Mummy and Daddy,” Brett burst into tears. Marissa didn’t say anything; she just carried on holding her precious little sister in her arms.
Later that day the doctor who had bandaged Brett up [She found out that she had a massive bandage round her head and stitches all over her face-it shocked her], Doctor James Martin, came in and evaluated Brett’s progress, “Now that you have woken up from your short coma, it will only be a matter of days before you will be able to leave.” He looked at Marissa, “Is this OK?” Marissa nodded her head, trying to look as happy as possible.
“Marissa, where am I going?”Brett asked, suddenly realizing that now, she had no one to look after her. Marissa’s gloomy face quickly turned into a gigantic grin, “You’re going to be staying with me!” Brett thought about it for a few seconds, I don’t want to stay with you, all we’ll do is business stuff, but she didn’t say that knowing it would hurt her feelings and neither of them needed any more hurt any time soon, “Great, can I take Crunchie?” Marissa didn’t need to think, her sister could take a box full of Barbie’s and she wouldn’t care, all that mattered was that Brett was saying yes, “Of course. Take whatever you want. In fact I’ll go and pop down the road to get you a couple huge suitcases.” Brett smiled; it was going to be fun!
Later that week Marissa was helping Brett pack her things into all seven of her suitcases. “Marissa, you said I was getting a couple big suitcases not five sets!” exclaimed Brett. “Well I thought you might want to take a lot more than clothes considering this won’t be your house anymore.” Brett held back tears at the thought of the house she and her parents lived in will belong to a complete different family in a matter of months, “Well you thought right.” Brett filled the two largest suitcases with her clothes, a small suitcase for Crunchie, a holdall full of pictures, two boxes filled of her mother’s favourite ornaments and lastly she filled two more suitcases full of her mum and dad’s stuff.
“Right,” Marissa sighed after Brett had everything she needed, “Let’s go.” Brett clipped the lead onto Crunchie’s collar while Marissa was loading the boot of her Ford Focus. Looking at the house once filled with love and laughter was too much for Brett. She fell to the ground and started sobbing like a baby. “Oh doll, it’s OK, Mum and Dad still love you but they’re in the heavens, in your heart, not at this house.” Brett sniffed, “I know, it’s just hard y’know?!” Marissa stood up, “Yeah, I know.”
Brett and Marissa stood together, hugging, “Woof!” Marissa laughed, “This dog is impatient!” Brett smiled, “No, he’s fussy.” Marissa threw her a questioning look then said, “Well standing around isn’t gonna do much!” Brett slid her hand across the smooth kitchen surface, where once her mum would stand and chop food singing to the radio-this room was her favourite, “Yes, come on Crunchie.” And with that they all bundled into the car, Crunchie sitting on the backseats, Marissa and Brett in the front.
Before they set off for the two hour drive, Marissa told Brett, “You can tell me if you don’t want to come. I understand.” Yeah, you say that but you do care, you really do! Brett thought, “I want to come but it’s not like I can stay here anyway-if i did I’d have to go into foster care or something. So the answer’s let’s be getting a move on!” Marissa turned the key in the ignition and pressed on the accelerator, slowly the car moved onto the calm street, filled with country style houses and beautiful gardens. “ I see why Mum was certain about moving here,” Marissa commented driving through the tree shaded roads of the small village the Forester’s live in, well used to live in.
As they left the village Brett turned towards her door window and started quietly crying, Marissa heard this but was to busy doing the same thing, a couple of minutes later they looked at each other-red eyed- and squeezed each other’s hand. “So when will Crunchie back there need to do his business?” Marissa asked. “Well if we stop in about an hour, I can feed and water him then we can take him for a little walk. He’s bound to do it then.” Brett replied looking at the car clock. Marissa smiled at how much her sister loved that little dog, just like having a sister or a brother...It finally clicked into Marissa’s mind! Brett only started begging her parents for a dog shortly after Marissa left for London-Brett was so upset when Marissa left, they used to do everything together. I can’t believe it! Marissa thought, of all the time Marissa had been away she had only seen her family twice. Now she felt bad.
Half and hour later Marissa asked, “Were Mum and Dad disappointed that I hardly came and saw you?” Brett gulped, “We all were, Mum and Dad didn’t mind that much that you didn’t see them it was the fact you didn’t come and see me.” Trying to get out the situation, “Let’s take Crunchers out here,” Marissa suggested.
