This story is about Emily Evans an Equine vet.

My name is Emily Evans, I'm eighteen years old and I'm a qualified Equine vet. I work hard to make Equine's better and help their owners with any problems. Often I am called out to see Horses or other equines in different area's

Another early morning, driving out in the countryside off to a call about an ill horse. It was only five o'clock in the morning. Still you get used to the werid early and late calls out as a vet. I didn't mind at least I was helping getting a horse better and helping the owner. I was heading for Popper Ridge Riding School. A horse had fallen ill early this morning and by the sounds of things it didn't sound too good.

I was joined with a fellow trainee colleege, her name is Eleanor Cassen, she's only sixteen and is hoping to become a qualified equine vet. At the moment normal she does the feeding, grooming, excersing, riding, watering, answering the phone at Jenkins Equine Hospital where I work. It was Eleanor's first time on a call out she was quite nervous to be honest. Anyway keeping my eyes on the road driving quickly with flashing lights on the top of the horsebox, we both sat on edge hoping to get to the riding school on time.

Finally we pulled up at Popper Ridge Riding School, switching off the engine, I jumped out the car running to the back of the horsebox to get the ramp down with the help of Eleanor, we pulled down the ramp slowly, making sure the ramp was steady on the ground I grabbed my vet kit out the front and ran into the yard with Eleanor. We saw a old looking woman waiting for us, I introduced us, "Hello, I'm Emily Evans, and this is Eleanor Cassen my fellow colleege, we're here about an ill horse" I said showing my ID tag I was wearing around neck with my stethoscope too around my neck. The old lady nodded "Yes, your here to see Star a grey 15.hh mare, she's struggling to give birth to her foal" Said the old lady showing us to Star's stable, the owner in the stable with the horse. Me and Eleanor walked into the stable. Star was lying down in her bedding struggling to breathe and to push to get the foal out, the foal was kicking at the mare's stomach wanting to come out. I kneeled down next to mare stroking her neck, before putting my stethoscope on and putting the end of it the metal nob on the mare's stomach to where the foal was.

The mare was struggling to cope, how much I tried Eleanor just stood watching worried not sure what to down, Star's nostrails flared, her eyes rolling. Star kicked hard where the foal was kicking "No" I thought, after a few minutes the foal didn't kick or responed to what Star did. Star looked calmer her breathing slowed down until it stopped, I felt for the heartbeat...But nothing, the mare had gone peacefully, she had suffered enough, the owner shed silent tears as everyone remand silent. I stroked the mare's neck "Rest in Peace Star" I whispered softly before getting up putting my stethoscope in my bag. "I'm sorry" I said to the owner before leaving her to say farewell to her mare as me and Eleanor walked back to the horsebox in silence. I walked to the back of the horsebox pulling up the ramp, as Eleanor got into the car as I joined her getting into the driver's seat. I felt I could have done more as I buckled up started the engine. "You did all you could Emily, the mare gave in" Said Eleanor softly. I shock my head, "No, I gave in" I said sternly, "I should have done more to help.I tried everything to help the mare give birth. But there was nothing I could do. I knew the mare was in alot of pain and struggle to breathe, the mare's pretty old to have a foal. It showed clear signs that it was better for the mare to go in peace. The foal was stuck and there was no way we could get the mare to hospital in that much pain. I knew I shouldn't have gave in, but I thought it was for the best" I said before falling silent, we sat in silence as I drove slowly back to Jenkins Equine hospital, after a while I spoke again. "There are difficult choices you have to make, and if you think the horse has suffered enough pain its best to put it to rest, its upsetting I know, but its choices as a vet you have to make" I said quietily.
