Samantha Jane jumped out of her side of her coaches Ute, slamming the door as she started to yell at the sixteen year old blonde boy who got out on the other side. “What is your problem?!” Sam screamed as she stormed away, the anger pulsing though her body. Jake quickly looked around aware of the attention her outburst had cause, “What the hell do you mean?” Jake said in a level voice “you know what I bloody well mean” Sam screamed back not caring about the curious looks they were receiving. She saw her coach walk in the other direction; at least he had the decency to leave them alone, all the other teenagers were edging closer, trying to get in on the action. ”you think it doesn’t hurt me when you say ‘I can’t believe they thought we were going out? How rank!’?” “I…” Jake started to say but Sam cut him off. “Don’t even bother you self centered jerk.” Jake tried to say something else but Sam cut him off again. “I can’t believe I even like you!” She saw Jakes eyes widen and realized what she had said, biting her tongue she turned her back and jogged over to the rest of her soccer team, allowing a tear to fall it caught in the grove of her mouth, it tasted of salt. She felt a hand touch her shoulder “look Sam...” Jake said “don’t touch me” she hissed, wrenching her shoulder from his grasp, she couldn’t help but notice the hurt in his blue eyes. Sam held her head up high; she wasn’t allowing herself to feel guilty. Not for him.
The two teams split off; everyone wanting to know what had caused the argument between the two friends. Sam started to make her way to her coach, who was also Jakes farther, she didn’t get very far before she felt an arm go around her shoulders, she looked up to see Marcus, The other under 16’s coach and also one of her favorite people. “You okay darlin’?” he asked looking at her face. Sam nodded holding back a sob that threatened to explode from her chest. He gave her a one armed hug and whispered so only she could hear “if it’s meant to be, it’ll find a way. Remember that” and with a wink he jogged over towards his team. Looking down towards the other end of the field Sam saw the other under 16 team; Jakes team. He was staring at her. Sam forced herself to turn around even though all she wanted to do was stay there and look at him forever. She strode towards her team with her head held high and without a backwards glance. Her coach Bill gave her a meaningful look Sam nodded and he didn’t ask any questions.
Training went for an hour and a half; it was dark before the last ball was placed back into the bag. Sam felt better, not exactly calm, but not as furious as before, that was until she remembered the trip home. Gulping Sam allowed herself to look over, his team was still training. She watched him run, his agility and skill with the ball was amazing. Quickly she turned away, hoping nobody had seen her longing gaze. Their fight had been the topic of conversation all through training. Everyone had their theories on what had happened but Sam kept the truth to herself, and she hoped Jake had done the same. Sam stood with Bill for awhile, Her I-pod fixed in her ears, the music drowning out her thoughts. The good thing about Bill was that he wasn’t one to pry or ask questions. He knew that if she wanted to tell him about the screaming match she had had with his son she would. It was a simple don’t ask, don’t tell policy. He didn’t ask so she didn’t tell.
The Boy’s in Jakes team split off, everyone heading towards their parents cars. Sam hopped into the Ute before she had to face Jake. In the side mirror she saw Bill say something to Jake as he stomped out his cigarette butt, Jake gave a half hearted smile. As soon as they had all piled into the car the tension hung around them like a cloud, one that wasn’t going to lift any time soon. Bill attempted to make small talk but failed dismally. So in the end he just gave up and they settled into an uncomfortable silence. Sam could tell Jake wanted to say something but he seemed to think twice about it. She was glad; she didn’t want to deal with him now, not here anyway. Sam twisted up the volume on the CD player and turned her attention back to the window, the trees whizzing by in a blur of black and green. As Bill pulled into Sam’s driveway Jake attempted to say something but Sam interrupted “thanks Bill, see ya Saturday” and slammed the door. She gave a quick wave before walking up the porch steps. Sam ignored the hurt look on jakes face and the guilty tug o her heart. Deep down she knew it wasn’t really his fault, he couldn’t have known she had fallen for him; it was just easier to blame him then to face the real problem. There was one slight catch with Sam when it came to boys; it was that she tended to fall fast... and hard. She couldn’t help it; it was one of her flaws. After dumping her sports bag in her room Sam undressed for a much need shower. She let the hot water massage her body and finally Sam let herself cry; the water washing away her pain.
Thursday and Friday were a blur, Sam couldn’t think straight. She got in trouble with her teachers and tripped over her feet in sport. By Friday night she was exhausted.
Sam felt her phone vibrate in her pocket, she slid it out of her jeans expecting there to be a message from Jake, he had texted her everyday trying to apologize, but Sam wouldn’t reply, not that it hadn’t crossed her mind to, she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. She was surprised to see his mums name on the screen, Joanna had texted her to tell her that they would be picking her up early tomorrow morning, so Sam could help with Jake and Joanna’s 2 little under seven’s teams. “Great” Sam mumbled “just what I need”. Jakes match was on before the under seven’s matches. She didn’t have a choice; she had to watch his game.
By 9.30 the text morning Sam was seated on the front porch in her uniform, her sports black and yellow sports bag sitting beside her. Sam tapped her foot against the porch tiles which resulted in an echoing sound. She wondered how much Jake had told his mum, Sam was hoping he had left out her last little outburst she couldn’t think of anything more embarrassing than Joanna knowing about her feelings for him. It wasn’t much of a surprise when Joanna’s four-wheeled drive pulled in the Jane’s driveway at 20 to 10. Joanna wasn’t known for being on time… ever.
“Morning” everyone greeted her as she climbed into the car, apart from Jake, he just kept to staring at her. “Morning” she replied, smiling in spite of herself. Ignoring Jakes look she settled back into her seat next to Leah, Jakes sister. Small talk was kept up with Jake and Sam saying something every now and then, whenever it seemed appropriate. No one seemed to notice Jake and Sam weren’t speaking and even if they did they kept quiet. No one mentioned anything about Wednesday night which was a good sign.
